Summer School

I will share how we approached our summer period in this blog. We usually ran our local camp the first or second week after school was over.
A week or so after camp was completed we started our summer practices. We practiced two days aweek for an hour and half. We tried to schedule practices so as to avoid conflicts with summer baseball practices/games. Some conflicts are inevitable. ALL summer activities were voluntary.
The summer practices were an excellent time to make adjustments in our offensive system and or defensive system. allowed our program time get a "jump" start on the next season. Along with the two days a week practices, we also typically scheduled 3 or 4 one day tournaments that took us out of our region. It gave our players the chance to see how good some teams in other parts of the state were. We often held our own but on occasion we got handled. I felt these tournaments were very beneficial. It tended to keep our players hat size the same.
It surprised me how little many teams in our section did during the summer. In my humble opinion, if you have
no organized summer program you are doing a disservice to your players. We ended our summer program by
the end of July. Many of our players were also football players and I thought it best to give them two weeks off
before they started football.
Once the summer practices and games were over, we as coaches, had a better understanding of what our
players could or could not do. The summer period is much more relaxed for players and coaches. Makes it a great environment to teach.
