Blob: "Vandy" vs man/zone (
Post Game Analysis: "Shot Selection" (Jan. 2025)
The late Rick Majerus was one of the few coaches I ever heard at a clinic
use the terms "shot allocation" & "shot distribution." Below are some thoughts to consider when you look at your shot chart after a game:
A) Shot distribution: Are your best shooters taking the most shots? Poor
shooters always think they are open. The reality is that may be
exactly why you were left open!
B) How many offensive rebounds did you get? Are you taking the
majority of your shots when your in position to rebound a possible
miss?
C) How many team free throws did your team attempt? One of the issues
with relying on perimeter shots is you reduce your chances of getting
fouled.
D) Are you making the defense "work" by making several passes before
the shot? A quick perimeter shot may be exactly what your opponent
is looking for.
E) Are the wrong players taking the wrong shot (for them) at the wrong
time?
*NOTE: It is a coaching mistake to assume your players understand shot allocation. It is a coaching mistake to assume a player understands what a good shot is for them. Unfortunately, almost every player thinks they are a 3 pt. shooter but only a few are 3 pt. makers.
