They say timing is everything. Well my timing for this post is very poor! I ran across this information just recently and felt it should be shared even though this should be shared in the fall before practice begins.

Now, not all of the following is realistically necessary to cover with your team, but you as their coach can certainly find situations your team can benefit from practicing.

Philosophy:

1. Do I want to save my timeouts for the end of the game?

2. How long do I keep a player on the bench with foul trouble?

3. Spend some practice time experimenting with new ideas and plays for

special situations.

4. Make every situation that you practice as game-like as possible.

5. Consider covering an end of game situation at the end of every practice.

6. Use some special rules during your special situations in practice so that

your second team can compete with your first.

7. When will you put a bad free throw shooter at the line at the end of a

game?

8. When do you removoue a player in foul trouble in the first half?

9. When to put a player back in with 4 fouls?

10. Do you have a catch up game?

11. How are you going to communicate with your team with no timeouts?

Some Situations to cover & to Practice:

1. When to & when not to call timeout to save a possession?

2. How to ask for a timeout

3. How to save a loose ball

4. How to defend full, side, and under the basket.

5.Missing free throws intentionally to get a last shot.

6. Inbounding the ball in dead corner, full and side court

7. Throwing the long lead pass to the other end of the floor

8. Game winning shot

9. Offense vs "junk defenses" 10. Inbound plays with your backup in

bounder.

10. No help vs a great shooter.

11. Blockout assignments when on defensive free throw situations.

12.Offense rebounding situations.

13. Jump ball situations.

14. Fullcourt play when opponent scores late to take the lead.

15. How to take an intentional unintentional fout to stop the clock. Wdin

the ball with no timeouts.

17. Spot or move when in bounding the ball.

18. Are you going to guard the in bounder or not in a late game situation.

19. Will you change defense after a timeout.

20. Playing through bad calls.

21. Last shot vs man or zone. 22. Practice with and without timeouts

remaining.

22. Cover time & score situations such as down 4 with 45 seconds to play.

These are just some examples of situations you can practice so your team will feel more confident when and if a special situation occurrs.
